Boilly: Scenes of Parisian Life

An exhibition celebrating the artist Louis-Léopold Boilly (1761–1845) by showcasing a selection of his works from a British private collection never previously displayed or published. Boilly’s sharp powers of observation and wry sense of humour come through in the brilliantly detailed street scenes and clever trompe l’oeils.

As the artist was living and working in Paris, cue was taken for the title graphic from the iconic Parisian road signs, already present in Boilly’s time, along with a French typeface also developed during the lifetime of the artist.

“Alongside striking faces and changing fashions, Boilly’s wry sense of humour ensured that there was often somebody up to no good – stealing a kiss, picking a pocket, or even baring a backside!”
