Conversations with God:
Jan Matejko’s Copernicus
A little jewel of an exhibition celebrating two Polish national figures: the painter Jan Matejko (1838–1893) and Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543). The exhibition displayed a number of objects in showcases, including a 1543 copy of Copernicus’s ‘De revolutionibus orbium coelestium’ with his theory that for the first time proposed the solar system with the sun at its centre and the planets orbiting around it.
Echoing the look of the astronomical objects, gold colour featured also in the accompanying graphics. As the exhibition was heavy on interpretation and light on wall hung artworks, an opportunity arose to design a night sky illustration on three walls, to be painted by a scenic artist.

“The night sky illustrations on the walls of this exhibition reflect the Northern, Eastern and Western skies as seen in the early hours of the day Copernicus died in Frombork, Poland, on 24 May 1543.”
