Photography 1857–2017

Part of the award winning Illuminating India season at the Science Museum in London, the exhibition charted India’s 150 year long relationship with photography, pivoting around two key dates: 1857, the year of the Mutiny and 1947, the year of Independence and Partition.

The exhibition highlights both Indian photographers and their foreign counterparts and includes works by Samuel Bourne, art photography pioneer Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and award-winning contemporary photographer Vasantha Yogananthan.

The look and feel of the exhibition was kept contemporary and clean to allow both the modern and historic works to stand out and tell their stories.

“We wanted to insert Indian named photographers side by side with their Western counterparts in a chronological manner to give them the same level of importance, as it is rare to see them shown in this way.
