Landseer’s The Monarch of the Glen
A National Gallery exhibition focusing on one of the world’s best known animal paintings, ‘The Monarch of the Glen’, by Sir Edwin Landseer (1802–1873). First exhibited in 1851, the painting returned to Trafalgar Square for the first time in more than 160 years, accompanied by other works from Landseer, his contemporaries as well as contemporary artists.
Echoing the work’s ever continuing appeal, the title design uses a modern typeface with subdued natural colours and materials. A pattern for the title wall was adapted from the wallpaper design in the Refreshment Rooms of the House of Lords, where the painting was originally commissioned for. A large scale silhouette of the monarch stag was reproduced to mark the arrival of the exhibition.

“What distinguishes ‘The Monarch of the Glen’ from other works by the artist is its euphoric, triumphal quality; it shows an animal in command of its environment, not – as yet – at the mercy of pursuers.”
Christopher Baker, Director of European and Scottish Art and Portraiture at National Galleries of Scotland
